Navigating the Art World: Insights on Business and Creativity

At last month's CreativityFlow series, our guest speaker was Ryan Wilson, known as ThankYouX. Ryan is an innovative artist whose work seamlessly blends traditional and digital mediums. He began his artistic journey as an anonymous street artist in 2009, creating tributes to Andy Warhol, ultimately leading to his identity as ThankYouX.

ThankYouX shared insights into his early career, discussing how his experiences as an art director at Universal Music Group fueled his passion for creating art for himself. He recounted the late-night escapades of putting up his wheat paste posters around LA, which garnered attention and helped him find his voice as an artist.

He went into the evolution of his work from street art to a fusion of digital elements. His groundbreaking collaboration with composer Hans Zimmer for Phillips Auction House was a turning point in his career. This partnership allowed him to merge visual art with music, resulting in a unique project titled "Sound of Color." ThankYouX described the creative process behind this collaboration and how it elevated his career and placed him in the league of iconic artists like Banksy and Warhol.

“I think that now more than ever, the artist has the power."

Additionally, ThankYouX shared his experiences with brand partnerships, including his significant collaboration with Snapchat, which transformed his career trajectory. He emphasized the crucial role of understanding the business side of art and offered valuable advice for aspiring artists on navigating contracts and building relationships within the industry.

ThankYouX reflected on the balance between commercial work and staying true to one's creative vision. He highlighted the importance of trusting one's instincts and surrounding oneself with a supportive circle. This conversation was informative and inspiring, showcasing the resilience and creativity that define his artistic journey.

Why Your Ads Aren’t Working Like They Used To

How brands can develop a balanced marketing strategy for sustainable growth.

by Matt Raminick, founder & CEO of Sunnyside

We’ve finally reached an inflection point, seemingly evolving on from our obsession with and reliance on performance advertising and its inherent focus on short-term ROI, to a place where in order to stand out, a renewed investment in awareness tactics to generate brand heat is needed more than ever.

As recent as 5 years ago, it was seemingly easy to set up a Facebook ad campaign and generate attributable purchases. The pandemic fueled ecommerce and cemented performance marketing adaptation with its measurable ROI, which effectively became “marketing” for many brands.

To see in real time the ability to spend $1 and make $5 was almost addicting (and made it easy to justify the marketing expense to the CFO signing the checks).

Today, growth is slowing for many brands.

On the surface, we’re seeing headwinds with privacy implications, the ability to opt-out of tracking on a mobile phone, the inevitable demise of browser-based cookies, shifts in customer spending, economic uncertainty, rising advertising costs, and it’s an election year.

All of this is a recipe for decline in performance marketing and rise in new customer acquisition costs.

Many brands as a result are putting as much emphasis on promotional events as they are product launches, which is a race to the bottom.

So what can you do?
