Group Y Content : Why Your Best Ideas Start with Slowing Down

Lessons from our recent CreativityFlow talk

In this Week’s Group Y Content, Slightly Choppy founder Scott Richards revealed how embracing life’s natural rhythms—and finding inspiration in the everyday—can reignite and sustain a more meaningful creative practice.

presented by

At last month's CreativityFlow, Scott Richards, founder of Slightly Choppy, delved into the intricate relationship between creativity and the natural rhythms of life.

Slightly Choppy, a brand known for its unique blend of artistic expression and everyday inspiration, reflects Richards' personal journey as a creative.

He emphasizes the importance of balancing output with input, drawing parallels between the creative process and the ebb and flow of the ocean.

"In order to create, you can't just always be outputting. You need that input,"

He explains, highlighting the necessity of stepping back to recharge one's creative batteries.

Richards shares his philosophy on finding inspiration in the mundane, illustrating how he often wanders through his neighborhood, capturing images of seemingly trivial subjects, such as address plates and color breakups.

This practice not only fuels his creativity but also serves as a reminder that beauty and inspiration can be found in the most unexpected places.

He cites UK clothing designer Paul Smith, who famously said,

"You can find inspiration in anything. And if you can't, look again."

This mantra resonates deeply with Richards, who believes that a fresh perspective can unlock new creative avenues.

Throughout the conversation, Richards reflects on the lessons he has learned from his experiences in the creative industry.

He acknowledges that creativity is not a constant stream but rather a dynamic process that requires patience and self-compassion.

By embracing the natural cycles of creativity, he has learned to appreciate the moments of stillness as much as the bursts of inspiration.

"I'll just cruise around the neighborhood... and I'm inspired by all that."

He shares, underscoring the value of taking time to observe and absorb the world around us.

Those attending & watching the talk’s video, they are encouraged to adopt Richards' approach to creativity in their own lives.

By recognizing the importance of balance, observation, and a willingness to seek inspiration in everyday life, individuals can cultivate a more fulfilling creative practice.

The conversation serves as a powerful reminder that creativity is not just about the end product but also about the journey and the experiences that shape it.
