In our latest CreativityFlow talk, we had the pleasure of hearing from Jason Sperling, the Chief Creative Officer of Innocean USA, who shared his remarkable journey through the advertising industry.
From his early days in the San Fernando Valley to leading iconic campaigns for brands like Apple and Honda, Jason's story is a testament to the power of creativity and resilience. He humorously recounted, “I decided that the best thing to do was to sell [porn magazines] door to door,” showcasing his early entrepreneurial spirit and unique perspective on creativity.
Jason emphasized the importance of understanding people and culture, drawing from his background in sociology. He noted, “Sociology was so interesting because it really was the study of how groups think,” which has significantly informed his storytelling approach in advertising.
This understanding of human behavior has been crucial in shaping successful campaigns, including the legendary "Get a Mac" campaign, which he described as a grind of creativity and collaboration, stating, “We were so close to landing this other idea... but it was sort of one denial after another.”
Transitioning from a creative role to a leadership position, Jason shared valuable insights on managing talent and fostering a collaborative environment. He advised aspiring leaders to shift their focus from personal accolades to empowering their teams, saying, “If you're managing people and it's all about you, you're gonna lose people.” This shift in mindset is essential for nurturing high-performing teams and driving innovation within organizations.
As Jason continues to steer creative direction for powerhouse brands, he remains committed to pushing boundaries and adapting to the ever-evolving landscape of advertising. He concluded with a powerful reminder: “Advertising has always run parallel to culture and to technology... it is about adaptation, constant adaptation.” This adaptability is key for anyone looking to thrive in the creative industry.
