Elevating Sports With Innovation & Inclusivity

Insights on Community, Partnerships, and Diversity in Sports

We were fortunate to have Courtney Carter at the recent Sound.Sport.Style event. She is the Chief Revenue Officer of the Seattle Sounders and the Seattle Reign, with a rich background in sports marketing and partnerships. She has previously worked for major organizations such as ESPN, MLS, and CAA, and has experience running her own marketing agency. A former Division I college athlete, she played for Oregon State, which adds to her deep understanding of the sports industry.

Insights and Takeaways

• Passion for the Sport: Courtney emphasizes her love for soccer and how it has shaped her career. She believes that her background as a player gives her a unique perspective on the industry.

• Opportunity in Seattle: She sees Seattle, a hub of innovation, as a city ripe with potential, especially with upcoming major events like the FIFA Club World Cup in 2025 and the Women's World Cup in 2027. She aims to elevate Seattle's profile in the sports world.

• Democracy of Sport: The Sounders have a unique model where fans have a voice in the management of the team, including voting for the General Manager every four years. This level of transparency and fan engagement is unprecedented in North American sports.

"We have a really cool, very transparent way of running our business, which has its real awesome moments, and then also moments when we have to look at ourselves and go, okay, are we doing that right?"

• Innovative Partnerships: Courtney highlights the importance of strategic partnerships in sports marketing. She recently orchestrated a significant collaboration with Google Pixel and INDIVISA to celebrate Megan Rapinoe's retirement, showcasing how effective partnerships can elevate a brand's reach.

• Inclusivity and Representation: She stresses the importance of inclusivity in sports marketing, ensuring that diverse voices are represented in campaigns and partnerships.

Involvement with Selema Masekela and the Warren Miller Project

Courtney has a longstanding professional relationship with Selema Masekela, having worked with him in various capacities, including as his manager and producing partner. This fall, she is involved in the 75th-anniversary film of Warren Miller, where Selema is one of six directors. The film will tell the story of LJ Henriquez, a young Dominican snowboarder, showcasing the importance of inclusivity and representation in outdoor sports. Courtney's collaboration with Selema on this project reflects her commitment to elevating diverse voices in the sports and outdoor community.
