Shaping Portland’s Culture Through Community & Creativity

At our recent Sound.Sport.Style event at Kamp Grizzly in Portland, the panel talk "Rooted in Community - Shaping Portland's Culture Through Community & Creativity," moderator Nishat Akhtar engages with three influential figures in Portland's creative scene: Marcus Harvey, Yogi Hakim and Jazmine Agcaoili.

Marcus Harvey, the founder of Portland Gear, shared his journey of building a brand that embodies the spirit of Portland. He emphasized the importance of creating a logo that resonates with the community, explaining how the P logo was designed to represent pride in the city. Harvey highlighted the evolution of his brand from local to global, noting that Portland Gear's products, particularly their backpacks, have gained recognition beyond the city. He expressed his desire to foster human connections through the brand, illustrating how a simple logo can spark conversations and create a sense of belonging among people, whether they are locals or visitors.

Yogi Hakim, the Executive Creative Director of Kamp Grizzly, discussed the pressures and responsibilities of being a creative in a city known for its rich legacy of innovation. He acknowledged the competitive nature of Portland's creative scene, where agencies and individuals strive to produce exceptional work. Hakim emphasized the importance of mentorship and collaboration, stating that his role is to empower the next generation of creatives. He believes that by nurturing talent and fostering a supportive community, they can collectively elevate Portland's creative output and change the narrative surrounding the city, especially in light of the challenges it faces.

Jazmine Agcaoili, a fashion content creator, shared her personal journey of discovering her passion for fashion during the COVID-19 pandemic. She spoke about the transformative power of community and how Portland's vibrant culture has inspired her creative expression. Agcaolli highlighted the significance of representation, particularly for marginalized communities, and how her work aims to reshape perceptions of Portland as a hub for creativity beyond just sports. She encouraged others to embrace their unique styles and take risks, illustrating how authenticity can lead to unexpected opportunities and connections within the community.

“I think it's really important for us to just embrace like we're all here in Portland and that's the thing that we have in common regardless of what we do and we're all part of this creative community.”

In conclusion, each of our panelists offers valuable advice for aspiring creatives and entrepreneurs looking to make an impact in their communities. They stress the importance of being present, embracing collaboration, and continuously learning from one another.

The discussion serves as a reminder that creativity thrives in the community, and by supporting each other, individuals can contribute to a vibrant cultural landscape. The panel leaves listeners inspired to engage with their local communities and harness their creativity to foster positive change.
