The discussion centered around their unique journeys in the creative industry, highlighting the pivotal moments that shaped their careers and how the vibrant culture of Portland has influenced their work.
Each speaker shared anecdotes about their early aspirations, their challenges, and the unexpected turns that led them to their current roles.
Hanna Boone, the Brand Creative Director at Stumptown Coffee, reflected on her journey from a background where pursuing a career in the arts was discouraged. She emphasized the importance of not having rigid expectations, which allowed her to explore various creative avenues and ultimately led her to a fulfilling role in the coffee industry.
August Heffner, the Group Creative Director at Instrument, shared his transformation from a shy individual to a confident leader in design, illustrating how embracing vulnerability and collaboration has been crucial in his creative process.
James Arizumi, Senior Design Director of Energy at Jordan Brand, discussed his unconventional path from architecture to footwear design. He highlighted the significance of taking risks and stepping away from traditional family expectations.
"I think my younger self would be impressed that I made a life and a living off of making shoes, which I never had or wore any shoes before."
