Amy Stanton on the Evolution of Women's Representation in Sports

In the newest episode of the Group Y Live podcast with Oli Russell-Cowan, our guest Amy Stanton, founder of Stanton & Company, shared her inspiring journey from engineering to marketing, highlighting her experiences in advertising, the Olympic bid for New York, and her work with Martha Stewart. Stanton's passion for empowering female athletes and her commitment to building a business focused on women's sports have positioned her as a leader in the industry. Throughout the conversation, she emphasized the importance of brand building and the evolving landscape of women's representation in sports.
Stanton's career began in engineering, a field she quickly realized was not her true calling. After transferring to a communications program, she found her passion in advertising, where she thrived in the fast-paced environment of New York City. Her formative years in advertising, working with major agencies like BBDO and J. Walter Thompson, laid the groundwork for her future endeavors. Stanton's transition to leading the marketing and PR efforts for New York's Olympic bid was pivotal, exposing her to the power of collaboration and creativity in a high-stakes environment.
After the Olympic bid, Stanton took on the role of Chief Marketing Officer for Martha Stewart, where she learned valuable lessons about brand identity and the importance of authenticity. Despite her initial unfamiliarity with the brand, Stanton's objective perspective allowed her to contribute meaningfully to Martha Stewart's business. This experience fueled her desire to create her own agency, which she founded with a focus on promoting female athletes and their stories. Stanton's vision was to build a platform that would elevate women's sports and provide positive role models for future generations.

As Stanton's agency grew, she became a sports agent, representing notable athletes like snowboarders Gretchen Bleiler and Jamie Anderson. Her approach to athlete representation emphasized brand building and storytelling, allowing her clients to connect with audiences on a deeper level. Stanton's commitment to authenticity and open communication has been a cornerstone of her agency's success, fostering a culture where both clients and employees feel valued and empowered.
“I want to change the world. So I don't want to go out there and just do stuff for the sake of it.”
Amy Stanton's journey serves as a testament to the power of following one's passion and the importance of representation in sports. Her insights on brand building, authenticity, and the evolving landscape of women's sports provide valuable lessons for anyone looking to make an impact in their field. As the conversation continues to shift towards inclusivity and empowerment, Stanton's work stands as a beacon of hope for aspiring female athletes and entrepreneurs alike.
