Trevor Graves on Action Sports, Authenticity, Technology and more.

In the newest episode of GROUP Y LIVE, our host, Oli Russell-Cowan, had the pleasure of sitting down with Trevor Graves, a legendary snowboarding photographer and the founder of Nemo Design. Trevor's journey from a small town in upstate New York to becoming a pivotal figure in the snowboarding and action sports culture is nothing short of inspiring.

They started the conversation by discussing Trevor's early years, where his passion for skateboarding laid the groundwork for his future in action sports. Growing up in Chittenango, New York, he was surrounded by a unique blend of talent, including BMX riders like Dave Mirra and skateboarders who would later make their mark in the industry. Trevor shared how he picked up a camera to document his friends and their skateboarding adventures, which eventually led him to discover his love for photography.

As they delved deeper into his story, Trevor recounted how he transitioned from being an aspiring athlete to a photographer. He described the pivotal moment when he realized that he could turn his passion for snowboarding into a career. His first significant break came when he became the East Coast correspondent for International Snowboard Magazine, which opened doors for him in the industry.

Trevor also shared insights into the evolution of snowboarding, the importance of authenticity in action sports, and how technology, particularly AI, is reshaping creative work. He emphasized the significance of networking and building relationships, which played a crucial role in his success.

“Authenticity Is Everything”

They discussed Trevor's desire to create a collaborative environment that valued creativity and teamwork, which led to the founding of Nemo Design. He reflected on the challenges and triumphs of running an agency for 26 years, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the industry.

Throughout our conversation, Trevor's passion for snowboarding and photography shone through, as did his commitment to fostering authenticity in the creative process. He also shared valuable advice for aspiring photographers and creatives, emphasizing the importance of grit, dedication, and the willingness to take risks.
