In this week’s Group Y Content, we revisit last month’s CreativityFlow talk with Brian Gase, VP of Engineering Quality at Rivian, whose journey from aerospace student to Rivian’s fourth employee offers powerful lessons on creativity, collaboration, and building the impossible.
We are celebrating 20 years of Group Y, taking a moment to reflect on two decades of conversations, community, and ideas that have continually pushed creativity, culture, and business forward. We revisit "Future Proofing 101," where Brian McDonell of melin discussed how betting on yourself and deeply listening to consumers can help create brands that transcend categories.

In last month’s CreativityFlow talk, Brian Gase, Vice President of Engineering Quality at Rivian, shared his inspiring journey from a curious aerospace engineering student to one of the early pioneers at Rivian, where he became their fourth employee.
Brian's story is a testament to the power of creativity and collaboration in a rapidly evolving industry.
He emphasized the importance of surrounding oneself with passionate and open-minded individuals, stating,
"It's amazing when you're surrounded by creative, talented, open-minded people how much you can be the best version of yourself."
Brian recounted his transition from Ford Motor Company to Rivian, driven by a desire to embrace new challenges and opportunities.
He vividly described the early days at Rivian, where the team was small but filled with ambition.
"You could look at all the reasons that it was going to be impossible... and you'd be like, where's the money? Where's the product? Where's the factory? Where's the team?" (watch this clip)

Yet, the vision and determination of the team led to the creation of innovative products that have redefined the electric vehicle landscape.
Throughout the talk, Brian highlighted the importance of creativity in engineering, particularly in a competitive market.
He shared anecdotes about the development of unique features like the gear tunnel in Rivian vehicles, which emerged from a collaborative problem-solving approach.
"Creativity takes time and effort," he noted, emphasizing that innovation is not just about big ideas but also about the small, continuous improvements that make a significant impact.

As he reflected on his journey, Brian encouraged young creatives to remain open to opportunities and to embrace collaboration across disciplines.
"Every single person in your life is someone you can learn from," he advised, underscoring the value of diverse perspectives in driving innovation.
His insights serve as a reminder that the path to success is often paved with curiosity, collaboration, and a willingness to take risks.
