In this week’s Group Y Content, illustrator Gemma Correll shared how authenticity, humor, and honesty—especially around mental health—shaped her journey from drawing as a coping tool to building a globally recognized creative voice.
We also kick off Group Y’s 20th Anniversary by revisiting a defining January 2015 moment when Tinker Hatfield’s off-the-cuff “yes” about the Air MAG sparked a viral moment seen by the world.

In our latest CreativityFlow talk, we had the pleasure of hosting Gemma Correll, a talented British illustrator and cartoonist currently based in Southern California.
Gemma shared her journey from a shy child who found solace in drawing to a successful artist whose work resonates with audiences worldwide.
"I found it to be a way that I could process the world around me," she reflected, emphasizing how art became her conduit for understanding her thoughts and feelings.
Gemma's distinctive style, characterized by simple line drawings infused with humor, has attracted a diverse range of clients, including Amazon and the Washington Post.
She recounted her early experiences creating comics for classmates. This entrepreneurial spirit laid the foundation for her career, which has now expanded to include children's books and a forthcoming graphic novel titled Anxiety Land, set to be published in April 2026.

Throughout the conversation, Gemma touched on the importance of authenticity in art.
"It's more important to stay true to yourself and find the style that you are recognizable for," she advised aspiring creatives.
She also discussed the impact of social media on her work, noting that while having a large following (over 1 million followers) can be beneficial, it can also feel overwhelming.
"I think there was a kind of heyday of social media... but now there's just so much of it," she said, highlighting the challenges of standing out in a crowded digital landscape.

A significant aspect of Gemma's work is her focus on mental health. She candidly discussed how sharing her personal experiences with anxiety through her illustrations has helped others feel less alone.
"With mental illness, it can make you feel very alone and isolated," she noted, highlighting the importance of representation in art.
By using humor and honesty, Gemma aims to create a visual language that resonates with those facing similar challenges, making mental health discussions more accessible and relatable.

As Gemma continues to explore her creativity, she encourages others to embrace their unique voices and experiences.
"I hope that someone might see my work and recognize something in themselves that maybe they hadn't seen before," she shared, underscoring the power of art to connect and heal.

20 YEARS OF GROUP Y

January 2015
An unexpected "viral" moment occurred. Legendary Nike designer Tinker Hatfield was asked at Agenda Emerge if the infamous Air MAG self-lacing shoe from 'Back To The Future' would become a reality. He said yes. Instantly social media was ablaze with the news and soon picked up by mainstream media. Within 24 hours, we received 100,000+ mentions ranging from Time, Rolling Stone, CNBC, Mashable, CNET, Daily Mail, NiceKicks, and more.
This moment wasn't planned nor were we aware our moderator would actually ask this question. Thankfully he did.
